Cleaning and
Repairing Your Gown
You are not
required to have your gown professionally cleaned, however
you’ll want to have your dress in the best condition possible
before you sell it. We will not list your gown if it is not
clean and in like new condition, and in most cases this will
necessitate some type of cleaning.
Be careful when
finding a service to clean your gown! Not every dry
cleaner knows how to take care of the special care your gown may
need. If you need help finding a professional gown cleaner
at a good price, let us know. We have made a special deal
with the Wedding Gown Cleaning and Preservation Company and they
will do a gown cleaning (only, no preservation) for $70, a much
reduced rate from their usual $150 fee. We are offering
this rate to our clients that choose to sell their gown through
us only, please
contact us
if you are interested. You will NOT be able to sell your
dress if it is not clean.
A professional
cleaning (which many local dry cleaners will do) will greatly
increase the resale value of your gown. At the least, you’ll
want to make sure to do the best job possible removing any
stains and/or doing minor repairs (be careful not to try to
remove any difficult stains yourself before checking with a
professional). Getting the gown ready may also mean replacing
(or having a seamstress replace) worn buttons, etc. Some stains
may not be avoidable—for example dirt on the hem of your gown is
not only normal, but it is very hard to remove, so unless it is
excessive you may want to just note that in your description of
the gown. Fortunately, light wear at the hem is not usually
noticeable when the gown is on. Buyers usually do understand
that not all used gowns will be in perfect condition, just be
sure to be very specific in your description so you can avoid
confusion with your Buyer during the sale. Also take a picture
of any abnormalities and we can post that as well.
Measuring
- Since almost all used gowns have been altered, you’ll need to
measure your gown and fit it into a “standard” size chart that
we’ve created. See instructions in our separate “Sizing
Your Gown” page for more information.
Take Pictures
- Take several digital pictures of your dress, including
close-ups of special details. If you have a dress form or
mannequin available to you, setting the dress up on that for
pictures is best. A picture of you in the dress is usually not
the best idea. Be sure to show both the back and front of the
dress, and if the dress has a bustle, show the dress bustled and
with the train open.

Write as
thorough a description of your gown as possible, being sure to
include these details:
Setting Your Sales Price
– We recommend setting your sales price no higher than ½ the
original retail value of the dress. Of course the more
reasonable your sales price, the more likely your gown is to
sell. Remember, you're competing with EBay and lots of
other gown resale shops with very reasonable pricing.
Not to mention, your dress may be available through us and/or
other discount sellers for up to 30-40% off the retail price as
a NEW dress.
